The Norman Barnett Languages Trust
(Registered Charity Number. 1084591)

Providing grants for young people studying foreign languages

The Norman Barnett Languages Trust is a local charity which was set up by the will of the late Norman Barnett. Norman was a well known trader on Dewsbury Market with a love of foreign languages.

The aim of the Trust is to promote the study of foreign languages by young people.

Disken and Co act for the Trustees of the Norman Barnett Languages Trust in dealing with the administration of the Trust.

The Trust has been in operation for twenty years and has awarded more than 300 grants to young people living in the Dewsbury area and to local schools.

Who can apply?

Anyone who is resident within a five mile radius of Dewsbury Town Hall who is 24 years old or under on 31 December of the year in which the grant is awarded and who has demonstrated some ability in the study of foreign languages.

Organisations such as schools can also apply provided most of their students are resident within a five mile radius of Dewsbury Town Hall

When can I apply?

Applications for 2024 can now be submitted. We have written to local schools and may also advertise for applications in local newspapers. The Trustees will meet in February to discuss the applications received.

What sort of activities does the Trust fund?

Grants have been awarded to help young people travel abroad, to attend a course at an educational establishment (either in the UK or abroad) and to support schools in teaching foreign languages but any proposal which promotes the study of foreign languages will be considered.
